Christmas is over - here's where you can get your tree chipped

Many post-holiday tree-chipping efforts wrap up this weekend, with volunteers collecting Christmas trees to support a number of worthy causes.

The Capital Regional District website (crd.bc.ca) provides an extensive list of tree-chipping events. People are advised to remove all errant lights, screws, nails and ornaments that can cause problems with chipping equipment. Here are chipping options, as compiled by the CRD:

- Central Saanich Lions Club

Today, Sunday, Jan. 14 & 15, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

1703 Keating Cross Rd. (opposite the municipal works yard).

By donation. Funds will go to the Lions Society of B.C.'s Easter Seal Camp Shawnigan. Chipping donated by Dogwood Tree Services.

- Esquimalt Kiwanis Club

Today, Sunday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Archie Browning Sports Centre, 1151 Esquimalt Rd. Also at Royal Oak Shopping Centre 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Trees will be chipped for a donation to Esquimalt Kiwanis Club. Proceeds to local charities.

- North Saanich volunteer firefighters

Today 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Wain Road Fire Hall, 986 Wain Rd.

By donation. Half of the funds go to CFAX Santas Anonymous and half to a local family in need.

Phone-in requests for pickup will require a minimum $10 donation. Call: 250-656-1931.

- Oak Bay firefighters

Today, Sunday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Oak Bay Fireman's Park, 1703 Monterey Ave.

Trees will be collected in exchange for a donation to the Oak Bay Secondary Education Bursary Fund.

- Castaway-Wanderers Rugby Club

Today, Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Windsor Park (Currie Road side), next to the rose gardens.

By donation, proceeds to Castaway-Wanderers Rugby Club.

- Claremont Secondary School KEY Club

Today, Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Claremont lower parking lot, 4980 Wesley Rd.

By donation (minimum $5), proceeds to Claremont KEY Club - a student-led program that develops character and leadership.

- The Lions Society of B.C.

Today, Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Broadmead Village Shopping Centre, Tillicum Shopping Centre, University Heights Shopping Centre, Hillside Shopping Centre, Fort/Foul Bay Safeway, Sooke Home Hardware, West Shore Town Centre.

Donation to "Chip In for Kids," proceeds to Victoria Easter Seal House.

- UVic Vikes Track Team

Today, Sunday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

UVic Centennial Stadium parking lot.

Donation to the UVic Vikes Track Team.

- Reynolds High School band program

Today, Sunday 9: 30 a.m.-5 p.m.

Reynolds High School north parking lot at corner of McKenzie and Borden.

By donation - proceeds to support the Reynolds band program.

- Strawberry Vale Elementary School Parent Advisory Council

Sunday 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Strawberry Vale Elementary School, 4109 Rosedale Ave.

By donation - proceeds to support the Strawberry Vale School emergency kiosk. There is also a bottle drive and document shredding at the same time.

- Knights of Columbus

- Sidney Lions Club

Today 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Fundraiser for the Central music program.
