Times Colonist Christmas Fund: Thanks, Victoria, for your generosity
Jan 08 2012
As we start a new year with hopes of good health and prosperity, it is fitting that we thank our readers for their generosity, which helped others end last year on a brighter note and perhaps look forward to better times ahead.
A record amount - $284,553.13 - was raised through your donations for the Times Colonist Christmas Fund. The previous high was $277,851.25 in the 2002 campaign.
Your contributions, which came from school children, service clubs, employee groups, previous beneficiaries of the fund, and folks who have given yearly for decades, helped 4,212 individuals.
Single people, couples and more than 640 families received grocery and mall gift certificates to purchase food and gifts they couldn't otherwise afford.
The thank you notes we received are a reminder of the difference the fund makes in people's lives.
As one person wrote: "Thanks to the TC for the grocery gift certificates. The past few months have been lean months with the high cost of food. I struggle with mental health and addiction problems - having food on the table means a lot to me."
Since it was established as the 500 Fund in 1956, the Christmas Fund has disbursed millions of dollars to help those in need.
We have been able to do so because of you. Thank you, as always, for your kindness and generosity.
