Investigation confirms identity of victim in fatal trailer fire
Jan 10 2012
A forensic investigation has confirmed Joanne Crystal Joe was the victim of a fatal New Year’s Day fire inside her trailer on the Cowichan Reserve.
North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP confirmed Joe was the only one inside the trailer when flames broke out around 6 a.m. RCMP and fire investigators have not yet said if the fire was suspicious or accidental.
Joe was 19, not 20 as initially reported.
An autopsy was initially inconclusive and forensic pathologists had to rely on dental records to identify the badly burned body.
Joe’s boyfriend told the family there was a party in the trailer on New Year’s Eve and he last saw Joe in the trailer around 4:30 a.m.
Joe lived in the trailer next to the home of her parents, Abraham and Debbie Joe.
The family has asked the media for privacy as they grieve.
RCMP have not said when they plan on releasing the cause of the fire.
