Burglars steal car keys while family sleeps

Jan 13 2012

Sidney-North Saanich RCMP are looking for the thieves who snuck into a house while the residents slept, grabbed their keys and stole their car.

The burglars struck early Tuesday in the 8900 block of Mainwaring Road, RCMP spokesman Cpl. Chris Swain said. They entered through an unlocked door and stole purses, phones, a tablet, backpack and car keys, which they used to drive away the family car, a 2006 Toyota RAV 4 SUV. The two-door car is grey with a B.C. licence plate, 476 CLW.

The residents reported the theft later in the morning.

RCMP believe the break-in might be linked to an earlier incident in the 8800 block of Lochside Drive, around 1: 45 a.m. The culprits broke a window beside the front door but were scared away by the alarm, Swain said. The residents were home at the time.

Mounties went to the house with a dog unit but could not find the burglars.
