50 from Victoria lose jobs at Canpages
Feb 01 2012
Fifty Victoria employees of Canpages, a telephone directory maker, are among 700 in B.C. and Alberta reported to have lost their jobs due to declining advertising revenues.
Workers arriving at Canpages' Central Saanich office on Tuesday were greeted by a sign on the door referring them to the head office of Yellow Media in Montreal.
In 2010, Yellow Media purchased its main rival, Vancouver-based Canpages, for $225 million.
Yellow Media, through its Yellow Pages Group, publishes telephone directories in B.C., Alberta, Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Ontario and Quebec.
In the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2011, Yellow Media said its revenues fell 9.1 per cent from $355.9 million to $323.4 million, resulting from lower print revenues as well as lower revenues associated with Canpages and U.S. operations.
In a company profile on its website, Canpages says it publishes phone directories in B.C., Alberta and Ontario. It also has a phone-number search service on the web that displays ads, along with phone directory apps for mobile devices such as the BlackBerry and iPhone.
