A 26-unit apartment building in Victoria was evacuated Wednesday evening after smoke was reported in the building.
Victoria firefighters were called to the Medewiwin complex at 360 Gorge Rd. East about 9: 15 p.m. after reports of a possible fire.
All residents were urged to leave the building because of the thick smoke. Westbound traffic on Gorge Road was diverted.
A B.C. Transit bus was called to the scene to accommodate the evacuees and keep them warm while firefighters investigated the source of the smoke.
The Salvation Army's Beacon Bus was called out to offer support and refreshments to the residents.
Medewiwin apartments is a converted motel offering housing for formerly homeless people.
