Cause of Sooke mobile-home fire under investigation
Feb 06 2012
The Sooke fire department is trying to identify the cause of a Saturday fire originally suspected to have been set deliberately.
Owner Christie Smedley and her two sons, 12 and eight, escaped their mobile home safely after the fire started at 5:20 p.m.
Fire Chief Steve Sorensen was still trying Sunday afternoon to determine how the blaze started. He was waiting for an electrician to identify whether there were wiring problems. The owner said she had experienced electrical problems in the past, Sorensen said.
The fire started outside the home and one of the electrical outlets could be the cause.
“I want the inspector to look at the wiring in the trailer to either rule it out or identify it as a cause,” Sorensen said. “If we rule it out, then we’re not left with much else but human cause.”
The front of the single-wide mobile home was badly damaged. The family, whose names were not disclosed, had no insurance, Sorensen said. The fire was attended by 23 Sooke Fire Department volunteers who prevented the blaze from spreading to the adjacent mobile home.
More details will be available Monday.
