A 19-year-old man was arrested in Nanaimo after another man was beaten as he walked home from celebrating his birthday.
Police said a 32-year-old man was walking home with a friend after an evening out when the assault occurred at about 2: 30 a.m. Sunday, near Wallace Street and Campbell Street.
A man got out of a passing car, approached the victim and began punching him in the head, police said.
The victim hit the ground and was kicked several times in the head before the suspect got back in the vehicle and it sped off.
The victim lost consciousness during the assault and was taken to hospital, where he was given a CT scan.
Nanaimo RCMP spokesman Const. Gary O'Brien said the man is "in extremely bad shape," and will require follow-up surgeries in Vancouver for significant facial injuries.
Police said a witness wrote down the licence plate of the vehicle, which was instrumental in locating the suspect at his home soon after.
The suspect was served with a promise to appear and police are recommending charges of assault causing bodily harm.
The suspect is expected to appear in Nanaimo provincial court on May 29.
