Target Corp. announced Friday morning it will open a store in Hillside Centre.
The U.S.-based retailing giant will take over the Zellers location in the Victoria shopping centre and open in the spring of 2014.
Hillside will be the second Greater Victoria location for Minneapolis-based Target, which announced earlier this month it would open a store at Tillicum Centre in spring 2013. Each store will be closed for several months for between $10 million and $11 million in renovations before re-opening.
Target also announced Friday that Nanaimo North Town Centre will also be home to a Target location. That former Zeller’s store will open in early 2013.
Target had earlier confirmed it will open a store at Campbell River’s Discovery Harbour Centre and Courtenay’s Driftwood Mall.
Each of the new stores will employ between 150 and 200 and hiring will begin later this year. Applications are available at www.Target.ca/careers
Target plans to open 125 to 135 stores across Canada, the majority of which will open in 2013.
The mass merchandiser known for low prices on stylish products announced a major push into Canada after acquiring 220 Zellers lease rights from the Hudson Bay Co. in January 2011 for $1.8 billion. The retailer has 1,763 stores across the United States.
