Ministry asks: How would you improve the Pat Bay Hwy and Sayward Road intersection?
Feb 29 2012
The Ministry of Transportation wants your ideas today on how to improve a crashprone intersection in Saanich.
The ministry and Saanich South MLA Lana Popham are holding an open house to discuss options on improving the intersection of Patricia Bay Highway and Sayward Road, near Elk Lake.
Options under scrutiny include:
? the addition of an acceleration lane that would allow northbound traffic from Sayward to merge safely with highway traffic;
? the addition of a deceleration lane for northbound highway traffic to exit onto Sayward;
? the relocation of the transit stop from the north side of Sayward to the south side; and
? installation of signs with flashing lights to alert traffic to congestion ahead in advance of the intersection.
The open house takes place 6: 30 to 8: 30 p.m., at Cordova Bay Community Place, 5238 Cordova Bay Rd.
The event had attracted some controversy after the NDP's Popham said she spent $3,000 in venue, food and advertising fees booking the event, only to have the ministry take over the agenda and cut her out.
Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom said Tuesday it was a communications error.
Popham will be reimbursed and will play a lead role in the event as the local MLA, he said.
