Explosives found at Wikaninnish Sand Dunes

Explosives experts from CFB Comox were called to the Long Beach area this past weekend after a Parks Canada volunteer discovered a mortar round in the sand.
The volunteer came across the unexploded World War II-vintage round — cylinder-shaped and only about five centimetres high — while helping with restoration work at the Wikaninnish Sand Dunes. The round was a remnant of wartime training activity in the area.
The explosives team packed sandbags around the object to not only protect themselves, but also to help prevent shrapnel from spraying into the environmentally sensitive dunes when it was detonated.
