Explosives found at Wikaninnish Sand Dunes
Mar 02 2012
Explosives experts from Canadian Forces Base Comox were called to the Long Beach area this past weekend after a Parks Canada volunteer discovered a two-inch mortar round in the sand.
The volunteer came across the unexploded Second World War-vintage round — cylinder-shaped and about 30 centimetres tall — while helping with restoration work at the Wickaninnish sand dunes. The round was a remnant of wartime training activity in the area.
The explosives team packed sandbags around the object to not only protect themselves, but also to help prevent shrapnel from spraying into the environmentally sensitive dunes when it was detonated.
