Body found in ditch near Comox
Mar 10 2012
RCMP investigators closed one lane of Highway 19 near Comox Friday after a passing motorist reported seeing an adult body in the ditch.
The discovery at 9 a.m. drew a response from both Campbell River and Comox Valley RCMP and the B.C. Coroner’s service. The RCMP Air Services and forensic identification section as well as the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit are also involved in the investigation.
The road closure will be in effect for most of the day, said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Darren Lagan.
The gender, age or identification of the body was not immediately available.
Lagan would not speculate if the body appeared to be dumped there or if the person had been struck by a vehicle.
“We don’t generally touch [bodies],” he said. “We leave that for the coroner’s service and they’re the lead investigator in terms of determining a cause of death and identity.”
RCMP investigators are documenting the scene in case the death turns out to be suspicious.
They are also looking at recent missing-persons’ cases, such as 33-year-old Elizabeth Marie Lagis of Kingcome Inlet, who was last seen on March 7, 2012 in Campbell River.
Police are asking anyone who saw anything unusual in recent days along Highway 19 to call Campbell River RCMP at (250) 286-6221.
