Police cruiser crashes on Malahat
Mar 15 2012
An investigation is ongoing after a collision Thursday at 4 a.m. involving a marked police cruiser, a car and a tractor-trailer unit on the Malahat.
Island District RCMP said the cruiser was being driven by a West Shore RCMP officer. He was travelling in rainy, windy conditions with his lights and siren activated as he headed to a high-priority call involving a suicidal man in Shawnigan Lake.
Police said early indications are that the police vehicle crossed the centre line and struck the southbound car about one kilometre south of the Mill Bay turnoff, near Bamberton. The impact is believed to have caused the car to veer into the tractor-trailer, which was also heading south.
The 37-year-old car driver, who complained of soft-tissue injuries, was treated by ambulance paramedics at the scene. The tractor-trailer driver and police officer were uninjured.
A southbound lane closure was in effect until 9:15 a.m.
