Oak Bay police cordoned off a beach in the Uplands area Friday afternoon after three teenagers found what looked to be a homemade pipe bomb.
Thirteen-year-old Tai Orser and his two cousins were playing on the beach when they found a cylindrical object duct-taped with wires, said Tai's mom, Daisy Leslie-Orser.
"My son threw a rock at it, as 13-year-old boys will do," Leslie-Orser said.
When the boys came home and told her about the object, she called the police.
Leslie-Orser said the officers let the curious boys hover around for a bit as they investigated.
"The police texted a photo to the bomb squad and they said, 'Tape the area off and get the hell away from it,' so the kids were told to move away," Leslie-Orser said the boys told her.
The RCMP's explosive-disposal unit is coming to the Island today to dispose of the device, which will remain cordoned off by police tape in the meantime.
