A 31-year-old Victoria man will appear in court this morning facing one charge of assaulting a police officer.
Saanich Police allege the man spat a large amount of congestion directly into an officer’s face yesterday evening. It’s “a pretty substantial assault against anyone,” said Saanich Sgt. Ron Stewart.
Police report a man was stumbling along the banks of the Gorge near Tillicum at the dinner hour, approximately 5:30-6 p.m. when approached by police. He became verbal and aggressive, Stewart said.
When two Saanich officers tried to take the 31-year-old man into custody, he spat into an officer’s face and continued spitting and fighting off officers, police said.
It took four officers to get him from the car into police cells, according to police.
“He was ranting and raving in a drunken stupor,” Stewart said.
This morning the man says he cannot recollect the incident and is “quite remorseful,” Stewart said.
Despite this, he is aware he faces a charge of assaulting an officer, Stewart said.
The police officer who sustained the alleged attack is back at work this morning.
