Victoria firefighters responded to a fire in the basement of a home at 2632 Scott Street at 2:30 Sunday morning.
The tenant and his three-year-old son were in bed in the basement suite when the fire started. The man received burns to his foot and was transported to hospital where he was treated and released.
The tenant tried to control the fire with a garden hose before the fire department arrived.
The fire was contained to the rear lower area of the house with damage to the basement suite, the siding, soffits and framing.
No one from the main floor of the house was home at the time.
Damages are estimated to be $20,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
