Man, 83, dies after tree falls on him

An 83-year-old Duncan man died Tuesday when the Alder tree he was cutting on his Glenora property fell and crushed him.
Ken Williams died instantly. His wife, Josie, and several family members were inside the 4870 Marshall Rd. home at the time, police said.
"Apparently, he was a logger in the past," said North CowichanDuncan RCMP Const. Kevin Day. "He was falling the tree by himself. By all accounts he knew what he was doing and how to fall a tree."
Hearing the crash, neighbours working nearby rushed to the victim's aid, said police, but found him pinned under the tree and showing no signs of life.
One neighbour tried unsuccessfully to use an excavator to remove the heavy, mature tree, police said.
Williams had apparently used an excavator to prop up the tree to ensure it wouldn't fall on him, but the machinery slipped, according to police.
Fire crews were eventually able to remove the tree, but the coroner pronounced Williams dead at the scene.
