Motorcycles, truck in a wild collision in Sooke

Apr 13 2012

A three-vehicle collision on West Coast Road Monday evening left a motorcycle in pieces and its driver lucky to be alive.

Witnesses told investigators that two men, estimated to be in their late 20s, were zipping along on their motorcycles just before 7 p.m., when it appeared one driver lost control as he hit gravel on the shoulder of the road.

The motorcycle slammed into the grille of an oncoming older model Nissan pickup truck and might have soared over the truck before landing on the pavement behind it, according to Sooke firefighters.

The second motorcycle then slammed into the first bike.

"The first one exploded all over the road. I've never seen so many pieces," said Sooke fire chief Steve Sorensen. "From what people who live in the area told us, it sounded like they were going awfully fast."

The full extent of the motorcyclists' injuries were not known Monday night, but officials said the first motorcycle driver suffered a broken arm and several bad cuts. The second had road rash all over his back.

Both motorcycles had Alberta licence plates. The driver and passenger in the pickup were not injured.

The road was closed from shortly after the accident until about 8:30 p.m.
