A local group that includes runners, walkers and dog owners is spitting distance from its fundraising goal of putting nine drinking fountains along the Galloping Goose and Lochside trails.
The Capital Regional District recently approved the $54,000 project — just a formality, said Tom MacDonald, spokesman for A Drop in the Bucket, because the plan has been in the works for months.
“We were full steam ahead, anyway,” said MacDonald, who collects coins from trailside passersby.
MacDonald’s job with the Local Government Management Association of B.C. kept him busy over the first few months of this year, but now he is on the home stretch, hoping to increase the $36,000 already raised.
The plan is to start with three drinking fountains along the Galloping Goose and Lochside trails this year. One will go where the Blenkinsop Greenway intersects with the Lochside trail, another on the Galloping Goose near the White Spot in Colwood, and the third at the intersection of the Galloping Goose and Lochside trails near Uptown shopping centre.
“We have six of the nine fountains fully funded,” said MacDonald. The fundraising has been done locally while the CRD is helping to cover costs of water connections.
The project has relied on “a whole bunch of small donations,” MacDonald said, though it has also been helped by larger donations from the Running Room, Peninsula Co-op and Uptown.
MacDonald used to lead groups of prospective marathoners on the trails. A volunteer had to meet the runners to deliver hydration.
MacDonald will be out on the Lochside trail near McKenzie Avenue today, hoping to collect a few more dollars. Tax deductible receipts are available.
