Texting caused crash, driver says

A 22-year-old man decided to meet his predicament with honesty after a bout of texting and driving led him to collide with a pair of parked cars.
"I'm not gonna lie, I was texting," he told an officer at the scene of the crash early Sunday morning on Cedar Hill Cross Road, near Borden Street.
Saanich Police Sgt. Dean Jantzen said the man was headed southeast on Cedar Hill Cross Road about 1: 30 a.m., when he hit the cars. The driver's Pontiac Sunfire is likely a writeoff, while the others each had more than $1,000 worth of damage. The man was not hurt.
Despite breaking the law - he got a $167 ticket - the driver exhibited character, Jantzen said.
"I think it shows this young man took some responsibility for what had occurred," he said. "But I think it's an excellent example of why texting, e-mailing, using your cellphone, using whatever kind of electronic device [while driving] is not appropriate."
