B.C. high school golf championships cancelled
Apr 26 2012
B.C’s high school golf championships today became the latest casualty of a decision by teachers to withdraw from extra-curricular activities.
B.C. School Sports, the governing body for high school athletics, announced that the Single A, Double A and Triple A championships have been cancelled.
The news follows a decision to scrap the 2012 mountain-bike championship in a move that affected more than 700 student athletes.
The provincial track and field meet remains questionable. Organizers are still assessing the impact of the teachers’ withdrawal before deciding whether to proceed with the society’s marquee event.
The championship is slated for June 1-2 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby.
The rugby, tennis, badminton and girls’ soccer championships all are expected to go ahead.
The B.C. Teachers’ Federation voted last week to oppose the Education Improvement Act by pulling out of extracurricular activities. The union says the law, introduced as Bill 22, attacks teachers’ professional and labour rights and erodes classroom learning conditions.
The Lower Island Middle School Sports Association is to meet today to discuss whether to proceed with its spring season.
