B.C. will eliminate the standard school calendar in 2013/14, giving individual districts the ability to offer their own “creative scheduling options” for the school year.
Education Minister George Abbott announced the changes as part of Bill 35, the School Amendment Act 2012, introduced in the legislature Thursday.
The Education Ministry will still set a minimum number of instructional hours for schools each year, but boards will have more autonomy and flexibility in setting their calendars.
Abbott’s bill also proposes to let students mix online and traditional school classes in kindergarten through Grade 9. That option currently only exists for grades 10 to 12.
School boards will also be able to charge fees relating to the cost of offering international baccalaureate programs, according to the bill.
