$7,500 fine for restricted firearm
Apr 27 2012
A 33-year-old American has been fined $7,500 after pleading guilty Thursday to possession of a restricted firearm when he sailed into Bedwell Harbour on Pender Island on June 20, 2011.
Matthew Luckett, who was captaining the Breanna for one of its owners and 12 guests, told officers with Canadian Border Service Agency he did not have any firearms on board. When agents boarded the 80-foot vessel, they found an AR15 semiautomatic rifle and ammunition. The rifle is legal in the U.S.
Luckett spent the night in jail and paid CBSA $3,500.
Victoria provincial court Judge Sue Wishart said the main sentencing principle in this case is the deterrence of others.
