Lone wolf sighting in Saanich Peninsula reported

May 10 2012

An unconfirmed report indicates a lone wolf is roaming the Saanich Peninsula around Tanner Ridge and Elk Lake.

Last Friday, a Saanich police officer saw what looked like a wolf running down a street off Tanner Road, said Scott Norris of the B.C. Conservation Service.

Wolf sightings are rare, but not unexpected, Norris said, noting they have been seen near Sooke, Metchosin and Shawnigan Lake.

There is minimal risk from a lone animal, he said. "They are one of the most unlikely animals in the wild to attack a human."

Anyone who thinks they see a wolf is asked to call the B.C. Conservation Service at 1-877-952-7277.
