A 25-year-old Saanich man is due in court today after he jumped into the Gorge Waterway near the Bay Street Bridge and attempted to swim for it.
A dog unit from Victoria police west division in Esquimalt was in the Rock Bay area on routine patrol this morning at about 1:30 a.m. when Const. Sue McLeod noticed a car on the road that had earlier been reported stolen.
When McLeod tried to pull over the vehicle, the driver sped off. A stolen car was ditched at Hillside Avenue and Turner Street.
Two suspects ran away but were tracked by her police dog to the Bay Street bridge.
“A female suspect was arrested on the bridge crossing,” said Const. Andre Almeida, also with the department’s “K9” unit, in a video released by the police department. “A male suspect had jumped in the [Gorge waterway] and was trying to swim across.”
The soggy suspect was arrested near the 2500-block of Pleasant Street.
The male suspect is expected to appear in court today. He faces charges of possession of stolen property, flight from a peace officer and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
