West Shore RCMP charge youth pastor with sex crimes
May 16 2012
A youth pastor has been charged with sex crimes for having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a teenage girl from the church.
The mother called West Shore RCMP in April 2011 to report her teenage daughter had a sexual relationship with the pastor between July 2007 and November 2008, said RCMP spokesman Sgt. Max Fossum. The mother only became aware of the relationship after it ended.
The girl was 16 at the time and the pastor was 28.
The investigation went on for a year and on April 19, 2012, 33-year-old Ira Parmenter was charged with sexual exploitation.
On May 11, Parmenter was arrested in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland. He has been released on a promise to appear in Western Communities Court on June 21. Parmenter was required to surrender his passport and released on strict conditions not to be in the company of any female under the age of 18 without another adult present.
Parmenter was a youth pastor at Colwood Pentecostal Church between 2003 and 2009. Mounties are still working with the church management as the investigation continues, Fossum said.
West Shore RCMP have not received any similar complaints relating to Parmenter, but are asking anyone with information related to similar circumstances to speak with investigators at West Shore RCMP or their local police department.
The identity of the victim is not being released because she was a youth at the time of the offences.
