Family Day announcement coming Monday
May 28 2012
It appears the date has been set for B.C.'s newest statutory holiday with Premier Christy Clark staging an announcement Monday.
She will be joined by Labour Minister Margaret MacDiarmid at the Vancouver Aquarium to release information about Family Day, a proposed new long weekend scheduled for February.
Clark's government made it clear a new holiday is coming on either the second or third Monday of the month. For the past two weeks, the public has been able to give input on which day they would prefer.
The second Monday coincides with Presidents Day in the U.S. and would fall on the same weekend as similar long weekends in other provinces. Choosing the third weekend, though, would allow British Columbians to avoid long-weekend traffic because it will not be tied to these other holidays that already create bustle in the province's picturesque locations.
Scheduling makes February 2013 the first Family Day.
Clark and MacDiarmid will make their announcement at 11:45 a.m. at the aquarium.
