A keen witness and a zealous police dog helped nab a burglar who stole a $3,000 bike from a Saanich cycling store early Monday morning.
A witness called police around 3:30 a.m. after he saw a man smash a door window of Cycles West in the 100-block of Burnside Road west, said police spokesman Sgt. Dean Jantzen.
Two officers rushed to the scene and Const. Jon Zelinski and police dog Zeke quickly began tracking the suspect.
Zeke tracked the man two blocks away, where he was hiding under a camper van in the 3200 block of Wascana Avenue. Police found a $3,000 mountain bike, which the burglar apparently ditched as he fled, Jantzen said.
The 28-year-old man was arrested and is facing theft charges. He was at large on a probation order and has a history of property offences across the region.
