Vigilance pays as neighbours report thieves

Victoria police say calls from alert neighbours thwarted thieves in two separate incidents on Wednesday.
Residents in the area of Kindersley Road and Naden Street in Esquimalt called police about 9 a.m. when they noticed a man breaking into cars, said Victoria police spokesman Const. Mike Russell.
Officers in the area arrived within minutes and spotted the man, who fled. The suspect was arrested after a short foot pursuit. Police believe he broke into several cars in the area before he was caught, Russell said.
A 31-year-old View Royal man is being held in custody for a telebail hearing on theft charges.
Later in the day, a resident in the 1500 block of Fairfield Road called police when he saw a man throwing rocks at the windows of a home.
Officers arrived two minutes later to find the door to the home kicked in and a man in the kitchen. A 44-year-old Victoria man is facing charges of break and enter.
