Kayakers rescued after boat damaged on rocks

Three kayakers were rescued by helicopter Tuesday evening after they became stranded on the steep rocky shoreline near Estevan Point on the rugged west coast of the Island.
The kayakers were paddling the shoreline north of Tofino when one of their boats rolled in choppy waters.
When his fellow kayakers went to his aid, one of the boats was damaged on the rocks.
The kayakers managed to climb up a rocky slope and flag down a passing boater.
The boater reported the stranded kayakers to the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre about 4: 15 p.m. and the centre called out a Cormorant helicopter from CFB Comox.
There was no place for the helicopter to land, said aircraft commander Capt. Jean Leroux, so a search-and-rescue technician was hoisted down to lift them up to safety.
"It was clear that they had no other means of getting off the rocks safely," Leroux said.
The three men were flown back to their campsite near Espinosa Inlet.
