Cougar spotted around jail
Jun 27 2012
Saanich police want residents to be aware that a cougar was prowling the area around the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre on Tuesday morning.
Saanich police confirmed that a cougar was seen in a nearby wooded area at 2 a.m.
A corrections officer saw the large wild cat walking the perimeter of the jail.
Saanich police only saw the cougar via the prison's surveillance video.
Police say they are not concerned about the cougar's presence and only want the public to be aware the animal is in the area.
B.C. Conservation was notified of the sighting but because the cougar was acting normally and in its usual habitat, conservation officers were not concerned.
