Two students starting their studies at the University of Victoria have been awarded four-year scholarships worth $60,000.
Jennifer Borchert of Vernon and Aliya Khan of Vancouver are among 40 students attending 20 Canadian universities to receive the inaugural Schulich Leaders Scholarships, the largest science, technology, engineering and mathematics-based scholarships of their kind in Canada.
Khan has worked with the elderly in her community as well as on humanitarian missions in Ecuador. Borchert has helped to build a path along a preserved wetland, volunteered at a hospice and contributed to the construction of a Nicaraguan orphanage.
The scholarship is named for Canadian business leader and philanthropist Seymour Schulich.
