Island cracks magazine's Top 10 list
Jul 10 2012
For those looking for an island getaway, it turns out it doesn't get much better than home.
Vancouver Island has once again been named the top island to visit in Canada and the continental United States by readers of Travel + Leisure magazine.
It was also ranked 10th best in the world, behind the Philippine island of Boracay, and Bali, in Indonesia.
The Island's scenic beauty, people and hospitality are behind the ranking, said Dave Petryk, president and CEO of Tourism Vancouver Island. He'll accept the award at the magazine's award ceremony in New York on July 19.
"We've had No. 1 [in the Canada and continental U.S.] about four times in the last 10 years," he said. "I think the significant thing this year is that we're in the Top 10 in the world."
Readers judged island destinations for their natural attractions, activities and sights, restaurants and food, people and value.
Tofino's Wickaninnish Inn took the top title in the Canadian resorts category, with Sooke Harbour House in second. Victoria's Hotel Grand Pacific and the Fairmont Empress made the Top 10 in city hotels.
Resorts and hotels are judged based on rooms and facilities, location, service, restaurants and value, as well as optional characteristics for business travellers or families.
The New York-based magazine's World's Best Awards feature cities and islands, hotels, cruise lines, airlines, car rental agencies and outfitters.
Travel + Leisure readers completed surveys through the magazine and at TravelandLeisure.com.
Complete results are available online and in the August issue of the magazine, which will be on newsstands July 20.
