Five-car pile up on Pat Bay Highway yesterday

A five-car pile up on the Pat Bay Highway Sunday night is likely the result of drivers failing to keep their distance in stop-and-go ferry traffic, according to Sidney-North Saanich RCMP.
Despite the number of vehicles involved, only two people went to hospital. They were treated for minor injuries and discharged. However, four of the vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
The intersection of Hwy. 17 and Beacon Avenue saw the five-vehicle pile-up at 7 p.m. Sunday evening as traffic exited the Swartz Bay ferry southbound toward Victoria.
The first car allegedly stopped suddenly, according to police, which resulted in the next four cars rear-ending one another.
“What we want to say is to keep your distance and obey the amber flashing signals that warn motorists the road is congested — especially after ferry traffic is exiting,” said Sidney-North Saanich RCMP Cst. Robert Figueiredo.
Sunday night ferry traffic headed back towards the downtown core is especially busy. “That’s when it’s most congested especially at that intersection,” Figueiredo said.
