Jailbreak trial to be heard by judge
Jul 26 2012
A Victoria man accused of trying to break out of his cell at Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre last year has chosen to have a trial by judge alone.
Andrew Jonathon Belcourt, 22, is charged with breaking out of a prison cell with intent to escape. The offence is alleged to have taken place on July 12, 2011.
Belcourt's trial is scheduled to begin March 11, 2013, in B.C. Supreme Court. It is expected to last five days.
The Crown is not proceeding with the charge against Belcourt's co-accused, Max Higley.
Last year, officials at the jail found a hole in the ceiling of a cell. Saanich police said the inmates involved were never seen outside their cell.
They were removed once the hole was discovered.
