An 18-year-old Sooke man pleaded guilty Thursday to assault with a weapon.
David James Chiasson was originally charged with robbery, assault with a weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon and possessing a prohibited weapon while prohibited by a court order.
Crown prosecutor Melissa Murray told the court that on May 6 there was an altercation between Chiasson and another man outside the Chevron in Sooke. The confrontation became physical and Chiasson chased the man and sprayed him with bear spray.
Murray asked the court to impose a sentence of 60 to 90 days on the charge of assault with a weapon charge and stayed the remaining charges.
Provincial court Judge Patricia Janzen sentenced Chiasson to 45 days in jail followed by one year of probation. Chiasson must pay a $50 victim surcharge fee by Sept. 26.
