Elderly pair seriously injured as van crashes in ditch

Aug 09 2012

An 80-year-old driver and a woman in her mid-70s suffered serious, undetermined injuries Wednesday afternoon after the van they were in left Sooke Road and end up upside down in a ditch.

The pair was trapped inside and had to be removed with mechanical jaws, said Sooke RCMP Corp. Barb Cottingham. According to a witness travelling behind the van, the van was headed west, near Connie Road, when it veered to the right, drove over a grassy patch and hit a tree, she said.

The emergency call to Sooke RCMP came in at 4:15 p.m. One occupant was reported to be unconscious and the other semi-conscious.
