Three in custody after Nanaimo home invasion

Aug 19 2012

Three men are in police custody after a home invasion in Nanaimo Saturday morning left two people injured.

About 6: 50 a.m., three men entered an apartment complex on Uplands Drive near Oliver Road.

One of the men forced his way through a window. Once inside, he repeatedly punched a 30-yearold woman visiting from Vancouver in the face. Police are not sure if there was anyone else in the apartment.

The 60-year-old caretaker of the apartment building was kicked in the face when he tried to stop the men from fleeing.

Nanaimo RCMP responded to a 911 call and arrived with a police dog handler, who tracked down one of the men.

Witnesses were able to provide information to police that helped lead to the arrest of the other two suspects.

Two of the men are in their early 20s and from Nanaimo, while the third is in his 20s and from Vancouver.

Both the woman and the caretaker were sent to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for treatment.

The caretaker was later released with bruising on his face. The woman was undergoing surgery Saturday evening for a fractured jaw.

Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong said police are still investigating whether the attack was random or the victim knew the suspects. mkaralis@timescolonist.com
