Search on for cougar that killed goats, sheep

Aug 23 2012

Conservation officers are trying to catch a cougar that has been preying on farm animals in Central Saanich before it does any more damage.

Seven goats were found dead at a farm on Puckle Road on Wednesday morning. The day before, a farmer in the 6200 block of Welch Road found one sheep mauled to death. Authorities believe a cougar is responsible in both of the cases, which took place in the Martindale Valley area east of the Patricia Bay Highway near Island View Road.

B.C. Conservation officers are trying to find the cougar. They are advising farmers to remove brush and trees within half a kilometre of barns or livestock corrals, since the big cats like to hunt in areas that have escape cover close by.

Anyone who spots a cougar in the area should call Central Saanich police at 250-652-4441 or the B.C. Conservation Service at 1-877-952-7277.
