Shirley family injured in West Coast Road crash

Sep 02 2012

A 62-year-old woman and her 10-year-old granddaughter suffered major injuries in a traffic accident on West Coast Road Friday night.

The road was closed for about six hours after a head-on collision between an eastbound Jeep and a pickup truck carrying the woman, her husband, 65, and their two granddaughters, ages six and 10.

She said the emergency call came in at 7:13 p.m.

Cottingham said the Jeep crossed into oncoming traffic on West Coast Road west of Sooke, forcing the pickup to swerve into the other lane.

"Both passenger sides took the brunt of the collision," she said.

Cottingham said the crash was still under investigation, but that it appeared as though the Jeep's driver, a man from Colwood, had fallen asleep.

"When we got there, one of the girls was out of the vehicle being attended to by bystanders," she said, adding that they were consoling the girl and wrapped her in a blanket.

It took emergency crews 90 minutes to extricate the grandmother and the other girl from the vehicle using the jaws of life, Cottingham said. Both were taken to Victoria General Hospital by helicopter.

The two drivers and one girl were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Both drivers have been released from hospital.

The woman is in critical condition, while the 10-year-old girl is in the pediatric intensive care unit.

The six-year-old girl was in stable condition.
