Block party honours city's 150th anniversary
Sep 06 2012
Residents of Vining Street in Fernwood play host to an all-day block party that's open to everyone on Sunday. It's the fifth annual party celebrating the vibrant community - and, this year, it coincides with Victoria's 150th anniversary.
The family event starts with a mega garage sale from 9 a.m. to noon in an area stretching from Bay to Pandora, Cook to Shelbourne/Begbie and surrounding zones.
A children's treasure hunt will be staged with clues to be retrieved on the heritage streets of South Fernwood. The clues will be located on the district's award-winning painted hydro poles. Visitors will also be asked to pick the top three painted hydro poles, with prizes for the artists.
At 1 p.m., activities shift to the plaza area of Victoria High School (adjacent to the basketball courts). There will be live performances from 1 p.m. to dusk.
Ongoing entertainment includes face-painting, clowns, a puppet show and small amusement park
Dine at a community barbecue with pastries, popcorn and beverages. Net proceeds benefit the Community Micro Lending Society.
The event is free. Activities take place 1 p.m. to dusk Sunday on the plaza area of Vic High, 1260 Grant St.
