Vancouver Island teen arrested in death of mother of seven

Sep 11 2012

A 19-year-old Port Hardy man has been arrested and faces charges in the death of a 28-year-old mother of seven.

Cindy Scow, 28, was discovered in an abandoned house late Sunday night after a neighbour called authorities. Scow died in hospital early Monday.

A Port Hardy man is in custody but his name is not being released until he is formally charged. "What degree [of homicide], I don't know at this point - we'll have to wait and see," said Cpl. Darren Lagan, senior media relations officer with the RCMP.

Lagan was not aware of the relationship, if any, between the victim and the arrested man. An autopsy is expected to determine the cause of death.

The RCMP, B.C. Coroners Service and the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit continue to investigate.

Scow was discovered after RCMP responded to a call for medical assistance to the 100 block of Tsulquate Road in Port Hardy on Gwa'sala'Nakwaxda'xw First Nation land. First responders determined she was the victim of an assault, and the alleged assailant was arrested shortly before midnight on Sunday.

"Investigators are conscious of the significant impact this death will have on this community, and remind anyone needing support that crisis workers and RCMP Victim Services are available [to] help," RCMP said in a news release.

Skow's cousin Oliver Walkus said she leaves behind her husband, Tony, and seven children, ages two through 12. "She was a good person - great," Walkus said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Port Hardy RCMP at 2509496335, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477(TIPS).
