'Free baby' web ad sparks Victoria police probe
Sep 11 2012
An advertisement on the web-classified site Used Victoria offering a baby free to a good home has prompted a Victoria police investigation.
Police said the incident is probably a prank, but that it's "disturbing" nonetheless.
"There have been pranks like this before. But it doesn't matter if people think it's a prank - we need to make sure there's no kids in danger. That's number one," said Const. Mike Russell.
Victoria police started looking into the ad, which included a picture of an infant, after someone spotted it and reported it to them Monday morning.
Officers are now working with the service provider using the IP address to track down whoever is responsible.
"We know it's not within Victoria," Russell said. "We have to work with Used Victoria staff to try to track it down."
Russell would not speculate on what charges, if any, could be laid.
The advertisement was taken down after police were made aware of it.
