People, dogs escape as fire guts home

Sep 29 2012

All of the residents of a Cobble Hill home - including eight dogs - escaped a late-night house fire Thursday night.

Cam Ferguson, deputy fire chief of Cowichan Bay Volunteer Fire Rescue, said the fire call came in just before midnight on Thursday.

"En route to the scene, I could see the column of smoke and glow in the air, so I knew that we had a fairly significant fire underway," Ferguson said. "Upon arrival, the flames were through the roof already, the house was fully engulfed."

Fire crews from Mill Bay and Duncan were called to assist.

The value of the home and its contents was about $800,000. The cause has not been determined, but it is believed the fire started outside the house.
