Victoria police arrest suspected thief hiding under the covers

Victoria police arrested a 26-year-old Saanich man in connection with an attempted traffic stop Monday morning that ended with a Victoria police cruiser damaged.
Officers spotted a stolen car at Bridge Street and Gorge Road and followed it until it could be safely stopped.
At Vancouver and Balmoral streets, a police car pulled in front of the vehicle while another stayed behind.
The driver of the stolen car backed up and the Chevrolet Cavalier hit the police cruiser, damaging the bumper and headlights.
It then took off at a high rate of speed. Police did not pursue the vehicle out of safety concerns, said Const. Mike Russell, Victoria police spokesman.
Later in the week, police acted on a tip and set up a drug buy with a woman they believed to be a passenger in the stolen car.
She arrived at a Vic West location but then took off, with officers chasing her on foot. She led officers to an apartment complex in the 400-block of Catherine Street.
Officers located the suite she’d fled to and arrested her and the man they believed to be the driver. He was located in bed, under the covers.
The woman was later released. Christopher Spinney is charged with possession of stolen property, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, fleeing police and failing to stop at an accident.
