Mustard seed receives 99,000-pound boost

Oct 14 2012

Victoria's Mustard Seed Food Bank will add 99,067 pounds of food to its shelves, thanks to the 48-hour Great Canadian Food Fight that ended Saturday.

The donations represent a tremendous outpouring of food and community support, said executive director Rev. Chris Riddell. "This is a good start to the Christmas season."

There were plenty of fresh veggies, including 11,000 pounds donated by Galey Farms, augmented by food and money from people giving what they could at Ogden Point.

Donors topped the 98,635 pounds donated in Halifax, but were bested by the 135,014 donated in Kitchener-Waterloo and the 218,930 in Regina.

The Mustard Seed goes through 11,000 pounds per day. Its 7,000 patrons are allowed one hamper, packed with four days of food, per month.

Cash donations have dropped by 10 per cent in each of the last two years, taking $400,000 out of the system as food costs rise. For more information, go to mustardseed.ca. - Times Colonist
