Man flees with laundromat cash

Saanich police have plenty of evidence to work with in their search for the person who stole from Squeaky's Laundromat, then disappeared into the Saanich Plaza.
Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen said the proprietor saw a heavy-set man in his 40s or older walking out of an office at the laundromat about 2 p.m. Monday. She challenged the man, but he managed to convince her he had been petting the dog that was kept there. Within a few seconds, though, she noticed the deposit bag was gone.
The bag was later found in a garbage can at a restaurant in the plaza. Several hundred dollars was missing, but most of the cheques were still there, Jantzen said.
The bag will be examined for forensic evidence, he said, and the department crime analyst is looking for possible suspects who have committed similar crimes. Police will also check video cam-eras at the plaza.
