Gregory Brotherston charged in Langford home invasion

Oct 18 2012

Gregory Brotherston has been charged in connection with a home invasion at a Langford mobile home park on Oct. 6.

Brotherston, 31, was charged Wednesday with breaking and entering a mobile home at 2780 Spencer Rd. and committing assault with a weapon, and uttering a threat to cause death or bodily harm. He is also charged with the robbery of William Corlett, 78.

At a brief appearance on unrelated charges Monday in Western Communities provincial court, Brother-ston was ordered to have no contact with Corlett.

Brotherston, the youngest son of former Highlands councillors Marie and Ken Brotherston, is in custody at the Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre. He is to appear in court Oct. 29.

"My client adamantly denies committing the acts he is accused of in those charges and intends to defend those charges vigorously at trial at his earliest opportunity," Brother-ston's lawyer, Richard Neary, said Wednesday.

At the mobile home park on Wednesday, Cor-lett said he was awakened about 5 a.m. by a man who held a knife to his throat and demanded money. "He had my wallet and there was no money in it. He wanted the PIN numbers for my debit cards."

Corlett said his attacker hit him several times.

Corlett, who rides a scooter and requires homecare health services, said he recognized his assailant as a man he had met about a week or two earlier.

The door was not kicked in, Corlett said, because he "didn't lock it that night."
