UVic again reaches the top tier in Maclean's rankings

Nov 02 2012

The University of Victoria remains one of Canada's top universities in the latest Maclean's magazine rankings.

UVic trails only Simon Fraser University among 16 comprehensive universities that have significant research activity and a range of undergraduate and graduate programs. The two schools finished in the same position last year.

"It's good to see we're in the top tier," said Reeta Tremblay, UVic's vice-president academic and provost.

"It just reinforces that we're doing good things." Maclean's said the strong performance of schools in Western Canada was a big story this year.

"If there's one trend in the rankings, it's the rise of the West," the magazine said.

"Every university from Saskatchewan to the Pacific Ocean maintains or improves its standing."

Indeed, all four of B.C.'s ranked schools placed in the top two in their categories.

The University of B.C. finished second behind the University of Toronto among universities that have medical schools and offer a broad range of doctoral programs.

The University of Northern B.C. was second among schools that offer primarily undergraduate programs.

"UNBC, an 18-year-old school, debuted at ninth place 14 years ago," the magazine said.

"This year it has the highest total research dollars, and the second best student-faculty ratio - impressive for such a young school."
